Real Kids Shades Protect Your Child’s Eyes + Giveaway!

Real Kids Shades Logo

Winter is over, and spring has arrived!  While it’s still pretty cold around here, I know the warmer weather is on its way.  Warmer weather means my family and I will be spending a lot more time outside at parks and playgrounds.  We all love to be outdoors enjoying the warmth and the sun, but we don’t love the damage the sun can do.  So, we slather the kids with sunblock to protect their delicate skin, but up until recently, we weren’t giving their eyes the love they deserve.  Oh sure, both kids had sunglasses featuring their favorite cartoon characters, but we didn’t pay much attention to what kind of protection those “toys” were really offering.  Then I was introduced to Real Kids Shades, and I learned how important it is to take better care of my children’s eyes.

Real Kids Shades has partnered with Prevent Blindness America, the nation’s oldest eye health and safety organization, to educate parents like us about this very issue.  I’ve learned so much about the harmful effects UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun can have on the eyes, and that the damage is cumulative and can’t be undone.   Some of the disorders that can be caused by sun damage include cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, pterygia – abnormal tissue grown on the whites of the eyes, skin cancer around the eyes, and photokeratitis – sunburn of the cornea.  They all sound awful!  A child’s developing eyes are especially susceptible too, so the importance of providing them with adequate protection can’t be stressed enough.

Learn Spanish Through Reading with BookLingual Giveaway

BookLingual Logo

I’ve mentioned before that I think it’s important for a child to learn a second language, and it’s something I’ve been working on with both of my kids.  Having the right tools is essential when you’re a non-bilingual mommy trying to start your little ones on the path to Spanish literacy.  I’m happy to say I’ve found another great resource in a new series of bilingual children’s books called BookLingual.

BookLingual Books

BookLingual is designed to help children ages 2-8 learn to read in Spanish.  Based on scientific research on how children learn language and how they learn to read, BookLingual can speed up language learning regardless of how much (or how little) Spanish your child already knows.  These books use colorful illustrations and entertaining stories to familiarize your child with the most-used vocabulary words, phrases, and grammatical situations.  Kids read the books because they enjoy them, but they’re learning the entire time!

My children and I have been lucky enough to try 6 of the new BookLingual ebooks, including:

  • Bilingual Benny Likes Too Much
  • Bree and the Bee Can’t Share
  • Come to the Zoo!
  • Oh No, I’m Sick!
  • Grandma Cooks a Grand Dinner
  • Can You Guess What I Am?

The BookLingual ebooks can be read on any tablet, but I chose to use our computer because I found it much easier for the three of us to read them together that way.  Whichever way you choose to go, it won’t take long before your kids are hooked.  My favorite feature of these books is that the words are color coded so that the English word matches the Spanish word.  And don’t worry if you aren’t very familiar with Spanish.  A Quick Guide to Spanish is provided to help you figure out basic grammar and pronunciation, and their is also pronunciation help throughout the books themselves.  So even if you’re not an expert yourself, you can totally fake it.  [Read more…]

A Clump-o-Lump of Fun! Review & Giveaway

Meet theClump-o-Lumps

In this post, I will be featuring something that is completely silly, completely fun, and completely brilliant: Clump-o-Lumps.  The name alone speaks volumes on the nature of this children’s toy, but I’ll go ahead and tell you a little bit about them anyway.

Clump-o-Lumps are snuggable, swappable, stuffed animals from Knock Knock, a company that specializes in witty and amusing gifts.  There are six different animals to choose from (see above), and each one has zippable (that’s a new word) body parts so you can mix and match them with other members of the Clump-o-Lump family.  If you’re scratching your head and/or going “huh?” right now, have no fear; Knock Knock has created an easy to follow illustration to help you figure it all out.

Clump-O-Lump How-To

See?  Simple to do and so darn cute.  With a little unzipping and rezipping, you can create all kinds of interesting animals.  If I had all of them, I’d take Squid-o’s head, put it on Bird-o’s Body, and add them to Tig-o’s legs to make a squid who can fly and run.  How fun!

I was intrigued by this idea the moment I saw it, and I was very excited to get myself Squid-o the Squid.  Then I remembered this wasn’t for me, and that I should probably consult my children before making my choice, and that is how we ended up with Bird-o the Bird. [Read more…]
